Okay, picture this: You're sipping on a flat white at your favourite cafe in Perth, reading a blog post from your best virtual friend - that's me, Madeline - about how to embark on the grand adventure that is getting healthier. After all, life's just a little more fun when we're feeling our best, isn't it? Now, as a mum of two sprightly and adventurous kids, Harlow and Lennox, juggling a healthier lifestyle can be like trying to keep a wallaby in your backyard - a ride for sure, but trust me, you'll love the journey!
The very first step on this remarkable quest is setting realistic and achievable goals. Wishful thinking gets you nowhere, darlings. The key to attaining your health goals isn't about drastically calorie-restricting diets or overly strenuous workouts. It's about making small changes to your lifestyle that gradually become habits. Think of it as a kangaroo leap, taking off strong and landing even stronger.
Now, comes the part that most of us dread - food. When it comes to healthier food habits, most of us think of rabbit food (salads, if you remember)! But let me tell you that kale is not the be-all and end-all of healthy eating.
Once when Harlow and Lennox were little, I tried disguising brussel sprouts as 'green meatballs'- let’s just say that was a massive failure, and I’ve been permanently banned from food deception in my household. But it did get me thinking about how to incorporate nutritious food choices into our diets, in a delicious and kid-approved way. We need nourishment that gives us energy, fills us up, and fuels our body with the right amount of proteins, carbs, fats, and, of course, those necessary vitamins and minerals.
Did you know that just moving helps burn calories? So, whether it's a quick walk to the local supermarket or an intense Zumba class, it's all about being physically active in a way that puts a smile on your dial. Exercise isn't punishment; it should be fun and something you look forward to. After all, isn't it better when your heart's pumping and your endorphins are flowing?
There's this one time when I picked up Lennox from footy - he insisted that I had to try it out. So, there I was, trying to kick a footy while wearing a dress. Picture the sight! I must have been such a sight, but we all laughed our heads off. Exercise doesn't have to be dull, adopt that footy spirit!
Physical health and mental health are like two peas in a pod; they go hand in hand. We often overlook our mental health, but the peace of the mind plays a pivotal role in achieving overall health goals. Practising mindfulness, gratitude or just having a bit of a chinwag with a mate can work wonders for your mental health. We are all human with our highs and lows, and it's okay to not have your stuff together all the time (if you do, share the secret, mate!).
"Sleep is for the weak", said no mom ever. Ain’t that right, mates? We adults need a good 7 to 9 hours of sleep to function optimally. And no, cat naps don't count! Did you know, sleep deprivation can lead to various health risks: obesity, high blood pressure, and even heart disease? Fun Fact: Without adequate sleep, our brains cannot effectively absorb and recall information. So, next time you're justifying an all-nighter, have a think about that. Plus, who doesn't love a good uninterrupted sleep!
And finally, let's talk about the magical elixir of life - water. Water plays a vital role in maintaining your body's optimum functioning, and staying adequately hydrated is absolutely key! Did you know that our bodies are about 60% water, and the darling brain is composed of about 75% water! And no, a daily dose of flat whites does not count as hydration!
Remember, we are all uniquely different, and it's important to listen to your body when it comes to nutrition, exercise, sleep, hydration, and keeping our minds healthy. You are your best guide. Hats off to our venture towards a healthier lifestyle, it's genuinely a fun ride once you figure out your path. So, the next time you're sipping on a flat white, think about taking that tiny first step towards your health goals. Together, let's embark on this beautiful journey to wellness!
